LOS ANGELES GET INVOLVED

We will list specific ways to get involved in your region here when available, but in the meantime please contact us to find out general ways to help us in our fight for fair and open competition!

This Tuesday, April 7th, 2015 the Long Beach City Council be voting on an issue that could add 15% to the costs of all city construction and that would discriminate against most of its citizens. The issue they will be voting on is a Project Labor Agreement (PLA). The PLA is being considered on behalf of Big Labor special interest groups who represent less than 15% of the local construction workforce. The PLA would cover all city-funded work valued at more than $500,000, something that HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE IN CALIFORNIA!

How does a PLA discriminate and reduce bidders thereby raising costs?

  • They force all companies to hire their workers through a union hiring hall
  • They force all workers to pay union dues and fees
  • They force all workers to pay into union health, welfare and pension plans they will never benefit from
  • They forbid non-union apprentices from working at all

What’s worse is the PLA the City has “negotiated” with union special interests has not even been made public yet!

 This is an outrage.

The most comprehensive study every conducted on PLAs has found that they raise the costs on projects 13-15%.  On a $100 million taxpayer funded project that means an additional $13-15 million being Wasted just so union special interests can be made happy, the same union special interests that fund the political campaigns of the council members voting for this backroom deal.

Tell your City Councilmen to represent ALL Long Beach residents and to not waste money our struggling city doesn’t have.

If you live or work, or would consider working, on a City of Long Beach construction project, then you need to plan on attending TONIGHT'S Long Beach City Council meeting at 5:00pm. At the meeting the city council will be taking up the issue as to whether or not there should be a study undertaken by staff to determine what the cost of placing a PLA on all city work might be. Click here to read the agenda item (#14) for yourself. While the answer appears obvious you can bet that will not be the case for union yes men on the council who really have no time for such triviality. To paraphrase former Long Beach City Councilman Jack O'Connell, the city just needs to come to agreement with union bosses and work out the details later.

Please consider attending this important meeting and letting the council know what you think about a PLA on ALL city work.

As you can see here the city is moving in that direction and we need your help to stop them!

Meeting Details

When: TONIGHT, December 16th at 5pm

Where: Council Chamber, 333 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90802
