Power Plant Approved Despite Union Greenmail Attempts!

Posted: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

For the past year, CFEC and the ABC Southern California Chapter - under the
direction of Government Affairs Director Jackie Nutting - has fought the
greenmail campaign of California Unions for Reliable Energy (CURE) to force
the Victorville City Council to sign a PLA for a massive 563 megawatt solar
hybrid power plant.  The other day CURE took a huge blow when the California
Energy Commission voted 5-0 to approve a license for the power plant despite
CURE's objections!

CURE had attempted to delay the project with massive data requests and
objections during the California Energy Commission permitting process and
with a lawsuit (rejected on June 30 by a Riverside County Superior Court
judge) against the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District.

Other ABC chapter government affairs directors and ABC of California's Kevin
Dayton have worked closely with the ABC Southern California Chapter in a
team effort to convince the City of Victorville and the power plant
developer Inland Energy to RESIST the greenmail and not succumb to a PLA.
The ABC Southern California Chapter even sent a mailer to 10,000 residents
(see attached) of Victorville informing them about CURE's scheme.

It's possible that CURE might try some desperate last-ditch legal actions,
and final victory should not be declared until the city actually awards the
bid for the power plant.  But right now the odds look very good that this
power plant will be put out to bid under FAIR and OPEN competition!
